Richard R. Thames is a commercial lawyer in his twenty-first year of practice. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of Florida (Finance Major) and his Juris Doctorate, with honors, from Florida State University College of Law. Mr. Thames is a shareholder, director and the President and Managing Partner of the Firm.
While attending law school, Mr. Thames interned for Justice Rosemary Barkett of the Florida Supreme Court, and the Honorable E.R. Mills of Florida’s First District Court of Appeal. Mr. Thames also interned with the Florida House of Representatives’ Commerce Committee, where he was responsible for drafting the Florida Revised Uniform Partnership Act. Mr. Thames’ article, Understanding Florida’s New Limited Partnership Act, was published in the Nova Law Journal.
Upon graduation, Mr. Thames served as Law Clerk for the Honorable George L. Proctor, United States Bankruptcy Judge for the Middle District of Florida, in both the Orlando and Jacksonville Divisions. Following his employment with Judge Proctor, Mr. Thames joined the law firm of Smith Hulsey & Busey as a member of its bankruptcy and litigation department. In this capacity, he represented individuals and businesses in a broad range of commercial matters including antitrust issues, bankruptcies, foreclosures, business torts and loan workouts. Mr. Thames also has experience in secured transactions, commercial lending and lease negotiations.
After five years with Smith Hulsey & Busey, Mr. Thames established his own practice specializing in commercial transactions, bankruptcy and litigation, eventually teaming with Mr. Stutsman in 1997 to co-found the Firm.
Mr. Thames is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the State of Florida (1987), the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida (1988), the United States District Court for the District of Arizona (1990) and the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit (1989).
Mr. Thames is a member of The Florida Bar, including its Business and Trial Lawyers Sections, the Jacksonville Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the American Bankruptcy Institute and the Association of Trial Lawyers of America. He is Board Certified as a Business Bankruptcy Specialist by the American Board of Certification. Mr. Thames is a frequent lecturer on bankruptcy and commercial litigation topics. Mr. Thames is a former director of the Jacksonville Bankruptcy Bar Association (President 1997, Vice-President 1996, Secretary 1995, Treasurer 1994) and former Chairman of the Bankruptcy Section of the Jacksonville Bar Association (1992 -1993).
